At the end of my first year of uni i had an operation that changed my appearence quite alot. This year i have been keeping a diary of my experience before and after my operation. I am using the diary to develope a serious of self portraits that relate to these experiences. Here are a few paintings i have been working on recently.

Hybrid

I am using the term 'hybrid' as a basis of my work this year. I have been making collages from magazines and any other resource material I can find to create strange, hybrid characters. I have also been looking at the Cut-Up technique where text is cut up and randomly placed to create new text. I have started to cut up my original collages to create new characters. I am interested in combining the ideas of Cut-Up, collage and hybrid forms into paintings, considering the space on the canvas as well as the imagery I use. I think it is important for me to keep disecting (literally) my work as I produce it, the way that I have chosen to work is exciting as it is about being spontaneous and impulsive, and the outcome cannot be premeditated.
Leigh Jennings
Project looking at Femininity, Stereotypes, Identity and Representation.

I've been looking at how to express femininity through objects, mainly knickers. Using various materials, some with the addition of text, each knicker is a portrait of what may be classed as feminine. Not one thing can define femininity and not many objects can solely be associated with females.
I'm now considering display and the effects this can have on the work. I'm also looking to strengthen my research and understanding of my chosen topic with questionnaires. While I have the basis of my project realised, I'm hoping to broaden my work to include perhaps drawing and film projection to strengthen and add depth to my work.
I'm constantly aware of the male gaze upon my work and how the audience and forms of display can alter the work.
Please see my blog for other images of previous work I created to reach my place so far. I also use my blog to upload any artists or images I find inspiring, they're not always relevant to this knicker project but often revolve similar themes.

"White lies"
I'll get this one out the way so I can update a lot quicker in the future;
I had a conversation with someone a while ago who was talking about the ADA being re-painted a different tone of white. A few other people had heard similar things but there was a number of different stories behind why it happened. The most amusing story was that the initial paint in some areas of the building had dried differently than in others, leaving a different colour on the wall. The architect wasn't happy and so had the entire building re-painted a slightly different tone of white. don't know if theres any truth in it but it just made me think 'i wouldn't be surprised!' I remembered this story because I find it interesting how our environments are often meticulously 'manicured' and our experience in them manipulated even without our involvement. (not too far away from my old theory of 'everything is a conspiracy and we're all being brainwashed!'when i was a bit younger).
More interesting than that tho was that I bought it, and I walked around uni with my head tilted for a while, examining the new paint which was so profoundly important. My work at the end of each year usually involves a lot of photo's of things i've put places (interventions) backed up with a lot of chat, stories, anecdotes, theory that you can apply to anything, and a lot of 'bending' the truth. all of this is the feedback I get from doing stuff initially - learning from it afterwards - and then sort of telling people it went brilliantly by adding layers of theory and context, which in a way is kind of true because it all came from feedback from other people in the first place. Iv started to play with the function of the documentation of work -which is becoming more and more interesting now we all need to rely on them for our assessment... . .anyway, have a look at images of previous work on my other blog!
For one of my projects, the big main one, I am planning to re-paint, again, the entire ADA building. To do this I need;
- To spread a rumour with a lot of help from other people
- word of mouth, plugs in meetings and lectures etc, e-mail, publish fake documents and letters from the architect + others in mind.
- set up ubiquitous but hidden interventions in the building E.G stack up tins of emulsion, cordon off areas of the building with hazard tape and dusty old carpet protectors and have ladders lying around etc. Think of Keith Willson's 'puddle'.
- Hire (for real -pay for by the hour) people to convincingly (ish) act out the job of the painter and decorator. this will also be part of the rumour as I will print adverts "Rick Mather architects looking for students to help with maintenance work - including info about the re-painting job.
The idea of a real economy is interesting to me (if it go's to plan - I'm selling some old work to pay for it) because ill be paying an artist to perform and paying them to carry out a pointless menial task, which we can all relate to.
I know there are loads of obvious things that you guys might have questions about if you've bothered to read this far but Il go on forever if I mention everything at once. + I've started to think that all the potential pitfalls could turn out to be interesting in themselves and work out differently so I'm welcoming questions.... . .sean
(obviously id appreciate it if you kept all this to yourselves 4 now cheers)

Family Tree.
Hello.
Before the christmas break i started thinking about the family tree as a metaphor and i started experimenting with origami mobiles using trees and recycled paper. The origami cranes are meant to represent memories and before i knew it i had made over 1,000 cranes in 2 weeks. At the moment i'm wondering if the process of folding paper is more significant than the finished pieces themselves, as a result i've started researching Therapeutic Filmmaking. Below is a very basic idea i had which i will hopefully be able to elaborate on in the future...

THE GIFTS
Hi Guys,
Just a Quick One...
My work or project this year is based around the concept of gift exchange and I just want to give you an initial update to what is happening with the project as a whole. My subsequent blogs will hopefully be more specific, and focus on separate pieces.
Before Christmas break I was focused on finalising project plans and attempting to answer fundamental questions such as
- What am I trying to achieve?
- And Why?
- What is reasonable within the timeframe?
- What is reasonable with the available resources/expertise/ability?
I am currently in the process of starting work on the sample group; the first 3 gifts, the progress of which I will update as and when appropriate.
Keep you posted.

Incidental Light - Mark Knipe
Hi everyone, heres some new photographs of the incidental light idea I've been working on. I became interested in this idea before Xmas break. The intent of my project can be found here in my own personal blog: http://urbanskyproject.blogspot.com/ I wont post it here cos' its quite a hefty post.
Ok so these images contain some light anomalies that i have found around liverpool. In some of the images the light almost looks like it has been painted on by hand. the shapes, colours and sizes are quite intriguing aswell, as some of these are over 20ft tall and yet people still walk by and not batter an eyelid towards them. I definetly feel that there is some creative link here between nature and the man-made. Could I create somethink of a simiar beauty using artificial light and artificial methods? Well my plan is to draw up some concepts and try a few mini mock-ups to get a feel for what material does what and such.
Mark
Visual diary.
The visual diary was my initial idea and now the basis to my work. It currently contains old photographs, comments and other things like that which coincide with my research material and thoughts about the aim of the project. The remainder of the book will be filled up with free association writing and my feelings towards therapeutic filmmaking.

Welcome to your curatorial blog
Hi all,
Welcome to your blog for your staff curator group 2, run by myself (John Byrne).
This will be the hub where information will be distributed regarding tutorial and group meeting time and dates etc. and, more importantly, the place where you begin to put up descriptions, images, links about your work in progress. Remember, I'm expecting at least 1 post/update per week off all students in the group.
I'll put up the times and dates of our next meetings, which will begin with individual sessions in my office, very soon. Meantime, get blogging about your work in progress
Regards
